Description
1986 NASA Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51-L Mission Patch. Purchased at the National Air & Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Wash D.C. and mounted on bookstore card. Approximate Size 4 1/2" x 4 1/2". Condition is "New".Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch on Jan 28, 1986. This is one of the mission insignia patches Dick Scobee asked Kennedy Space Center engineer Ernie Reyes to design as the mission patch representing mission 51-L.
The patch depicts Challenger after launching from Florida. The 7 stars represent the 7 astronauts, Hailey's Comet is backdropped against the U.S. Flag. The crew was scheduled to conduct comet research on the mission. The crew members in circle; names of astronauts: McNair, Onizuka, Resnik, Scobee, Smith, McAuliffe, Jarvis. First teacher in space; Christa McAuliffe, followed by a symbolic apple. This patch was completed before the flight and was to be worn by the crew on the mission.
