  • Size: Large
  • Condition: It is difficult to capture their overall ambience...and character...so note that individual shots are more indicative of overall coloration ...The sconces have light discoloration to the mirrors. The mirrors are sectioned with independent pieces coming together to create an overall backplate...the sconces also have a single board back plate of which the mirrors are mounted to..... both mirrors have have small cracks to the mirror at the bottom where the arms come together and bolt to the piece...through the mirror...please see photos....this at present are candle sconces however they have been carved out in the back to accept wiring the drip pans are also drilled to accept wiring they look to have been french wired at one time meaning that wiring would run on the outside of the arms through the drip pan and into the sockets which would have had carved wooden inserts that sat in the candle holder.... .

    Description

Up for consideration is a fine pair of 19th century or earlier Large Mirrored Back Etched wall Sconces. The Sconces measure 25 inches in height by 14 inches in width. Each piece of mirror is beveled on the edge and contains either a scene with birds or floral with kidney shaped cartouches. The center back plate has two mythological dragons purched on both sides an urn. The mirrors are inserted with leaded trim...and held on a solid carved piece of wood as a back framing...there is some strapping on the back...these are really quite remarkable pieces of which you don't see that often in America...the sconces were purchased from a wealthy Detroit Automotive industry affiliated estate.
Condition: light discoloration to the mirrors...the bronze arms on one spin around so an elastic band has been used to create a rubber seal so that arms don't slide to the left or right...there is a crack to the small portion of both mirrors at the bottom of each sconce...over the years instead of putting a rubber washer between the mirror and the glass to create friction and stop the movement of the arms "rubber deteriorates over time" previous owners probably tightened them to much.
Summary: these sconces are are larger than one would expect in a regular house...because they are mirrored they can just about fit into any such decor...they are the real McCoy 19th Century Venetian Mirrored back wall sconces...great to decorate with...Fabulous A++
