    Description

Up for consideration is fine cast pair French  figural wall sconces with Cherubs or Cupids. The sconces are heavy large well cast yet do not seem imposing. They measure a whopping 20.5 inches in height by about 15 inches wide with a depth of 9 inches. Which is pretty big...they need room to breath as they say in order to enjoy them. They are finely cast with better than average detailed casting and different finishes on different elements. The back places had a gilt bronze lighter brighter gold patina (is worn off now) whereas the full bodied Cupids are slightly darker...a great contrast... Now before we go any further let me clarify something there are a lot of brass and white metal sconces that sort of look like these but these are early and the kind of quality and style that lesser cheap knock offs made copies both physically and stylistically. They range a few hundred dollars you get what you pay for. If you are lucky you might do well. But let me point out that good early quality sconces that are cast figural pieces from Europe and America some companies like Caldwell were very high end... have a right and or left side which is known as complimentary meaning a cherub with it's right hand up on one sconce while  the other has his left hand up. Cheap later domestic companies often duplicated a single sconce so they were a pair but were two of the exact same pieces...ok secondly this one has a few extra pieces added in that were cast separately. Cheaper sconces are made to save money so they make them the easiest way use less inferior materials cut corners. Whereas more complicated sconces require more molds to be made more finishing assembly etc. and in general more labor intensive and more money put into the design initially. Lastly the quality of the casting cheap or inferior sconces more often than not has stylized details rather real fine details. IF you look at the faces on these you see proportional faces that are attractive and believable.
So that is it in summary you are looking at better sconces that in general and  are very attractive well thought out Complicated heavy finely cast (8lbs each) and of which the emphasis was on quality and aesthetics as opposed to mode of production economics and cost cutting scenarios.  Please see photos as part of the description. The sconce were being used as candle sconces whenever they arms are designed far from the wall it represents more often than not that there origin in design was based on keeping candles away from the walls. They have wiring through the arms but the wiring has been cut. There is wax in the candle cups.  No chips or cracks or visible repairs.
