RARE Starter Models Junior Johnson  ‘59 Impala Daytona Racer--Built
This is built from a very rare Starter Models 1/43 scale resin kit of Junior Johnson's 1960 Daytona winning car, a 1959 Chevrolet Impala. Starter Models is a French company so I'm surprised that they offered a classic NASCAR.

    Please review the photos closely.
I am NOT a professional model builder.
This is my hobby. If you are looking for perfect, NONE of my models will every be for you!
I deliberately built this car "dirty" ---just like it was AFTER Junior Johnson won the 1960 Daytona. Please be mindful of this.
    Further...
The decals were a bit brittle and unstable but I was able to save them. They are stable now as a result of several coats of clear lacquer.
I used the vacu-formed front windshield as its shape is very unique. I will finish a scratch-built rear window and have it installed before I ship the car.
The tires were too thick--not 1960's era NASCAR width. So I reduced the width accordingly.
Side exhaust pipes were out of scale so I made scratch built ones and attached them exactly as the Starter ones were supposed to be attached.
Added a copper tube to stabilize the rear axle assembly.
Here's a bit of history on the car...
Junior Johnson claimed his only Daytona 500 victory as a driver in the 1960 running of the race while driving a 1959 Chevy. He stated that when compared to the Pontiac’s his Chevy was so slow that it couldn’t compete. In some sessions he was nearly 30mph slower in his Chevy that the superior Pontiac’s. How did he go on to win the race, then?
During practice sessions he discovered that if he tucked in behind a faster Pontiac that it created a slip stream effect and allowed him to keep up, despite the fact that on it’s own his car was far slower. He could save up his energy and slingshot by the lead car for a short burst of speed, and used that method to win the race. Junior discovered what is now commonly referred to in racing as “drafting!”
