    Description

An amazing bronze from the days of the Grand Tour of Europe, possibly by E F Caldwell. In the civilized past,  educated young men or women from the best families toured Europe as part of their informal education (the rest of us worked in factories) They returned with treasures from their travels or bought such pieces upon their return. Here is presented a faithful copy of a Greek statue of Silenus. One of the gods associated with wine and frivolity. He wrestles with a snake. Held within the coils of the snake is the base of an oil lamp, with painted globe. At one point the lamp was wired for electricity but could possibly be returned to oil.
Comes in three pieces: the base, the oil lamp and the globe. Over all height is 36". I have included an original drawing and a catalog picture from the Smithsonian archives of the E F Caldwell Company of New York. This piece points to their production but it is unsigned
Very heavy bronze bade and fragile shade will require special packing. Also available for pickup in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Requires new wiring.
